My Ethical Problems with ObamaCare, As a Physician
Dear Friends,
I was trained as a physician–I took the Hippocratic oath. I can’t find anywhere in that oath any references to the principles of ObamaCare, and I certainly see nothing in that oath in common with the stated philosophy of Mr. Obama’s new Medicare director–Dr. Berwick, who extols the supposed virtues and superiority of the British socialized healthcare system—which, by the way, is not only obviously falling apart, but is actively having to transform back towards a privatized free market approach! To Mr. Berwick’s great chagrin, I and the vast majority of my physician colleagues do not consider ourselves part of a public utility–to be managed by government bureaucrats and agencies. We will not accept being treated as a public utility–we are private physicians, citizens, providing medical services to individual patients.
Every physician who is currently in practice–at least prior to the attempted corruption of the medical system, has taken a sworn oath to uphold the principles of Hippocrites–to care for the individual patient in front of them, and not some so-called greater good of society. Perhaps the reach of a corrupted government philosophy is now infiltrating medical schools, and new physicians are not being asked to take the Hippocratic oath–and may in fact be required not to take the oath–but if that is the case, it is our job to remind these students, these new physicians, of the rich and profoundly important ethical history of the practice of medicine in Western society. It is NOT “progress” to abandon a physician’s responsibility to the individual patient and start factoring in the socialist’s societal goals over the interest of the patient in front of us.
I understand that the corruption of the physician-patient relationship has been a slowly evolving and increasing process over the last many decades–starting with third-party insurance and culminating in the current attempt at full government control, interference and dominance, and coercion–but this does not change the ethical and moral responsibility that we as physicians have. We simply must resist the encroachment that government is demanding! And we must resist this encroachment loudly, in every way we can. We must support political candidates who will vow to defund and repeal ObamaCare and any and all of the statist/socialist policies now in place, or planned!
We cannot be intimidated by being called names–by being labeled heartless and cruel in our denouncing socialized government dictated healthcare. We know the truth–we know that our view of Constitutional Liberty, and responsibility and effective limited government is ultimately the best for everyone! We physicians are used to having to say difficult truths as effectively and kindly as possible–America needs our honest assessment and diagnosis, and our clearheaded prescription for putting this country back on the road to full recovery and health!
Let’s boldly do our part!!
